Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe! We hope you will be able to join the dedicated group of people who work to improve literacy in the Santa Fe area. We have many students waiting for tutors at this time. Your knowledge of basic literacy skills, our training, and a commitment to tutor two to three hours each week for a period of nine to twelve months are all that are required to get started.

Tutors are carefully interviewed, trained, and matched with students. In addition, because of our close affiliation with Santa Fe Community College, all volunteers (including tutors) must undergo a background check in accordance with SFCC policy.

Tutors receive ongoing support from LVSF staff and opportunities to improve their tutoring skills through workshops and in-service trainings.

As a volunteer tutor in our program, you have a choice of two specialties:

In our Basic Literacy (BL) program, tutors are needed to teach adult students the fundamentals of reading and writing, and some students also need tutoring in numeracy and basic math. See our Basic Literacy Tutor Job Description.

In our English as a Second Language (ESL) program, tutors are needed to teach English language skills to adult students whose primary language is not English. It is not required for you to have proficiency in any language other than English in order to teach these students. See our ESL Tutor Job Description.

Our tutor training is certified through ProLiteracy. Your literacy instruction will involve all language components: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. You will learn effective methods for teaching adults to acquire literacy and/or conversational English skills and to use those skills to meet self-identified goals such as job advancement, citizenship, and improved parenting skills. Due to the intense nature of this training, attendance is required at all sessions, including the follow-up meeting.

Once certified as literacy tutors, additional training is offered for:

  • Basic Literacy tutors who are interested in tutoring numeracy and basic math, and
  • ESL tutors who are interested in tutoring students who are applying for U.S. citizenship.

Typically we offer Basic Literacy and ESL training three times a year.  Numeracy and Citizenship training are offered on an as needed basis.  Please see the sidebar at right for upcoming dates for our English as a Second Language (ESL) and Basic Literacy training.
