Board Member Responsibilities and Purpose
To act as a voting member of the Board with full authority and responsibility to develop policies, procedures, and regulations for the operation of Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe (LVSF); to monitor LVSF’s financial health, programs, and overall performance; and to provide the Executive Director with the resources to meet the needs of those that LVSF serves.
Individual Board member’s duties:
- Attend all Board meetings and activities, including special events and Board retreats
- Become knowledgeable about Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe
- Come to Board meetings well-prepared and well-informed about issues on the agenda
- Contribute to meetings by expressing your point of view
- Consider others’ points of view, make constructive suggestions and help the Board to make decisions that benefit those whom LVSF serves
- Serve on at least one committee
- Represent LVSF to individuals, the public and other organizations
- Support LVSF through a personal financial contribution
- Assume Board leadership roles when asked
- Keep the Executive Director informed about community concerns
The full Board’s responsibilities:
- Make a serious, long-term commitment to the cause of literacy
- Establish policies, goals, and programs of the organization
- Participate in the hiring and evaluation of the Executive Director
- Secure adequate funding for Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe
- Monitor finances
- Create and update a long-range plan for Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe
- Select and support LVSF’s Board officers and periodically review their performance
- Adopt key operating policies and procedures; approve contracts as appropriate
