Art Influencing Literacy

Event with Artist and Author Phil Yeh

SANTA FE — Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe (LVSF) is sponsoring a four-day event in Santa Fe from September 22nd-25th, when artist, writer, and literacy activist Phil Yeh – with the assistance of students and local artists – will paint a three-panel mural to elevate literacy. This event is aimed at the education crisis the region faces with 30% of the population not being able to read or write.

The mural will be unveiled at “Brunch with Phil Yeh” on Sunday, September 25th, from 11am to 2pm at La Terraza Room at La Fonda on the Plaza. The sale of the tickets supports a division of Adult Education at Santa Fe Community College offering free tutoring to students in need. The brunch tickets are on sale for $100 per person and can be purchased at lvsf.org or https://one.bidpal.net/lvsfpyeh/welcome

URGENCY — Funding literacy has a direct correlation to Santa Fe’s population and economic stability. The community is asked to respond in kind or through participation in this stimulating and entertainment event.

IN PERSON — Yeh will provide a book signing at Collected Works Bookstore at 202 Galisteo Street in downtown Santa Fe on Friday, September 23rd from 5:30-7:00pm, where he will sign all three of his books, including his most recent book, Places, a full-color hardcover of 126 watercolors of cities and countries he has traveled.

Phil Yeh is an artist, author, and literacy advocate. He has painted murals throughout New Mexico and has also set his stories in Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Carlsbad. Phil founded Cartoonists Across America & The World in 1985 after being inspired by Wally Amos to do something about the literacy crisis around the world. His band of artists has painted more than 1,700 murals across the U.S. and in more than a dozen countries working with some of the most talented international artists, including painting a mural on a Santa Fe city bus with local youth to support Literacy Volunteers in 2010. As a promoter of literacy and the arts, Phil’s mural painting events and speaking engagements draw media attention to the education crisis we all face.
