Art Panero: As I think about my fellow LVSF board members, I say to myself that if these folks are as exceptional as they are, I could either be a gate crasher, or maybe I too have some exceptional qualities. Seriously, I like interacting with good people who dedicate themselves to the high aspirations and commitments of our students… Become a tutor. You will get so much from your time with motivated, brave students who have seen a vision for themselves and have launched themselves on their path of a hero’s journey.
Maria Ortiz: Literacy to me is when I think of achieving one of my first biggest challenges: learning to speak and write in a new language. Literacy gave me the inspiration to continue my education. Later in life, literacy gave me the opportunity to teach my sons and be able to read with them… I’m part of a great community that loves to help, and I am grateful every day for being part of this amazing group that is making life changes in other people’s lives.
Kristen Lieving: Literacy is important because it is about communication, which can transform lives. I started as an ESL tutor with LVSF and was working with a student when the pandemic hit––we couldn’t keep meeting, so joining the board was another way for me to serve the community. My top 3 books are The Secret History by Donna Tartt, The Executioner’s Song by Norman Mailer, and Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner. The LVSF staff is committed to the LVSF mission, and they really care about their students. I’m in awe of all they do.
Tom Stewart: Literacy is the essential basis for effective communication by and between individuals. I enjoy being able to impact the lives of literacy-challenged adults, and thereby improve their opportunities to advance socially and in their work… My favorite book/author is John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. It tells the quintessential American story of economically depressed people seeking to improve their lives! We have a goal of expanding the number of adults participating in and benefiting from the program.
