It is time for the National Endowment for the Arts’ BIG READ, which aspires to “broaden our understanding of our world, our neighbors, and ourselves through the power of a shared reading experience” and “inspire meaningful conversations, artistic responses, and new discoveries and connection.”
Reading Beyond
This is the kind of meaning-making and engagement that we as humans can reach once we have the functional skills we need to survive and succeed: the “beyond basic literacy skills.” This is the reason many volunteers contribute their time to Literacy Volunteers: because they love reading and want to pass that on to others.
Santa Fe Reads
The Santa Fe event is sponsored by Santa Fe Public Library. The community chose the following titles:
-
- Circe by Madeline Miller
- The Olympians by George O’Connor
- Goddesses and Gardens by Valerie Tripp
- Little Bear, You’re a Star! by Jean Marzollo
Can you guess the theme? If you haven’t read Circe, it is the wonderful tale of the Greek mythological herbalist/ sorceress/ nymph goddess Circe as told from none other but––herself!
“When I was born, the name for what I was did not exist. It was not a word I knew. It was not a word anyone knew, then. ‘Pharmakis,’ I said. Witch. …What was I truly? In the end, I could not bear to know.”
Community activities include crafting sessions, book discussions, contests and awards, an online challenge, a trivia night, and more! The final event, a conversation with the author and a performance by Teatro Paraguas, is in collaboration with the Santa Fe International Literary Festival. It will be held on Thursday, May 16th from 5:30-8:00 pm at the Santa Fe Convention Center. Learn more at the library website or at Santa Fe Reads.
