Teach English to your neighbors!

Our number one need is always for new language tutors. Partner with an adult immigrant learning English, a student learning to read and write or do math, or a student working towards their High School Equivalency. Meet new people from your community and work with them as they build literacy skills and achieve their goals.

  • No experience, second language, or diploma needed––we provide training and are here to support you as you go
  • There is an SFCC background check requirement
  • We welcome applications from all walks of life and encourage volunteers who are people of color, indigenous, immigrants, LBGTQ+, and those with disabilities
  • English speakers of all levels are welcome and encouraged to volunteer.

Sound like something you’re interested in? Volunteer as an English as a Second Language (ESL) or Basic Literacy (BL) tutor! (We always welcome the return of past tutors.) We have the following new tutor trainings coming up. Registration is required.

ESL Volunteer Tutor Training

Orientation (online): Thursday, February 8th, 4 – 6 pm
ESL tutor training: Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9th and 10th, 9 am – 1 pm

BL Volunteer Tutor Training

BL tutor training: Saturday, March 2nd, 8:30 am – 5 pm

All trainings at Santa Fe Community College, Health & Sciences Rm 487
TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Other Opportunities

Did you know that there are other LVSF opportunities for volunteers beyond one-to-one tutoring? If you enjoy working with groups or have other skills to share, we’d love to hear from you too!

  • Teach a small group in ESL, citizenship, or computer skills (note that SFPS group opportunities have additional requirements for background checks and training)
  • Write an article for our Quarterly Tutor Newsletter
  • Give a workshop for other tutors on a topic of your choice or expertise that you think would be helpful to others
  • Help out in the office
  • Host a tutor circle, event, or specific group (e.g. book club)
  • Assist in a High School Equivalency (HSE) or ESL class
  • Provide drop-in tutoring sessions
  • Be a substitute tutor
  • Give presentations about LVSF or post flyers around the community
  • Join the Board of Directors or the Development Committee to assist with event planning

Please reach out and let us know if any of these opportunities calls to you. Thank you for your generosity to this community and happy new year!
